UC Village Development

I have been a strong supporter of the planned retail and senior housing development on UC land on San Pablo (the “Whole Foods” project). I believe the current Council acted wisely and in the best interest of all of Albany by approving the project after nearly five years of active, lively public debate and consideration. I have watched this project develop over time and been impressed by the way it has change organically in response to concerns and requests from the council and from Albany citizens.

Here are just two of the reasons why I support this project. First, I believe it will revitalize a section of the city that is currently struggling. A large anchor store like Whole Foods can bring activity and investment, and can stimulate growth of existing and any new small businesses that operate in the area. Those wishing for locally owned businesses as well as those wishing for more support of businesses in the area would do well to support this project. A large grocery store could be the best thing to happen to the local businesses in the area that know how to take advantage of it.

Secondly, I believe the project brings some much needed and much desired senior housing to Albany. Seniors in Albany must now choose to either stay in their homes, potentially costing thousands of dollars a month for in-home support, or to leave Albany and move to a facility that provides the services they need. Because the planned Belmont Village facility offers different levels of care, it offers seniors an opportunity to remain in Albany long after they would have been able to live in their homes.
